Bluesci and Read Easy are working together to set up a group for Trafford, to provide additional options for adults who wish to learn to read.
A Skills for Life survey of 16-65 year olds in 2011 found that 5% of adults in England could only recognise a few common words, and a further 2.1% struggled to read simple health and safety notices at work.
Read Easy UK supports volunteers to set up and run life-changing reading coaching in their own communities. These groups provide free, confidential, one-to-one support for adults, particularly those at Entry Levels 1 & 2, who are often reluctant to learn in a classroom situation, or who might welcome extra support.
Volunteer coaches are paired with readers and meet with them twice a week, in a community setting such as a library or café. Many learners and volunteers tell us that Read Easy has been life changing for them!

Vicky, the North West Regional Adviser is now looking for 2 volunteers to help establish the Trafford Group. Vicky trained as an English Teacher before spending the last 10 years working with volunteers to establish and deliver services in Manchester. She explained “these volunteers are known as Pioneers as they will undertake some initial research and help spread the word in Trafford, to encourage other local people to come forward and help. Pioneering is a really rewarding volunteering opportunity for anyone who would enjoy the challenge of a project. We will work closely with the volunteers in making connections across the borough and to publicise opportunities to get involved, so there is plenty of help and support”.
